ACCELERATED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES A KEY TO SUCCESSFUL LEADERSHIP

Julia MphafudiOur Country has a history of women been previously marginalized in the workplace. The recently published Employment Equity report show lack of equity in the top echelon across economic sectors.  Our fundamental concern is continued skills shortage for black women in the Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professions. Women in leadership positions are faced with numerous challenges including hostile corporate culture. Being in a leadership position requires the capacity to manage complexity that comes with multiple roles and responsible within financial, social and economic and sometimes political spheres.

I have in my previous roles as HR Executive put in place a number of women accelerated development programmers to accelerate women from technical expertise to senior management roles. The aim of Women’s Accelerated Leadership programmes is to assist women to accelerate their capabilities to senior management roles. The programmes provides specific skills development to women professionals to prepare them for leadership positions within the industry. A number of development intervention can be built into the programme.

Key to the success is to ensure women are committed to participate and complete the programme. The Accelerated Development are implemented in the phased in approach for a period of a year to up to three years. The first phase involves competency standards developed in line with the programme objectives. Participants are assessed using different methods like psychometric and 360% assessments to establish developmental gaps. Once participants are aware of their developmental gaps, individual career paths are developed for each mapping the career pathways. The third phase consist rigorous training in areas identified areas for reach participate varying from academic studies-  leadership course from a business schools, action learning  personal development, Line Manager sponsor, self – awareness , emotional intelligence, mentorship and coaching. The last phase is reviews and monitor progress against agreed career plan and the success of the whole programme.

Julia Mphafudi As HR Executive I have the responsibility to help others reach their potential, I believe leaders need to pull others up in our various sectors. We also responsible to remove obstacles for those coming after us by creating growth and developmental opportunities. We should be create solid ladders for young women to climb and succeed in senior positions.
